how do i calculate Effective Area of ferrite cores?

Hello everyone!

Usually when i wind a ferrite core (ETD, EE, etc.) i often need to refer to manufacturer specifications and datasheets for the core "Effective Area"...
I use the calculation in here for cores: http://tahmidmc.blogspot.com/2012/12/ferrite-transformer-turns-calculation.html
I kind of noticed that this parameter is not derived from the cross-sectional area of the core.

How can i determine this parameter without referring back to datasheets?
its quite troublesome and often have to deal with unmarked cores salvaged from other PSU.

that was my first guess because thats we do with audio/mains trannies but as i browse upon manufacturer specs sometimes it doesnt add up... some published Ae are 90% of the calculated center core area some are exact... guess this is some kind of safety margin?
