udhay, I remember being in a similar situation as you not too long ago and had to learn a lot through trial and error and from my mistakes. Perhaps my journey can inspire you: http://tahmidmc.blogspot.com/2012/12/learning-smps-hard-way.html

As for equipment, you should have an ESR meter, an LCR meter, a good voltmeter, a good ammeter and of course, an oscilloscope. Digital storage would be great but you can make do without it.

Before designing transformers, you should learn how to calculate required turns for different topologies. You can get information on this from Marty Brown's "Power Supply Cookbook". It's been explained really well and presented very nicely. After that you can proceed on actual design of the transformer.
